Paul declared:
34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
1 Corinthians 15 [KJV]
In the verse preceding we find that those we become companions with to spend time with erode our morality. They even convince us that morality itself is worthless just by it rubbing off on us.Paul was deeply concerned that the Christian stop sinning and protect himself from falling again back into it through those they spent time with and found one accord with.
33
You must not be led to wander astray! Worthlessly evil companions of one accord shrivel away repeatedly habitual, legal usages that furnish what is needed.
34
You must abstain from wine and come out of that stupor equitably and you must not be sinning! For some are holding ignorance of God. I am laying forth forwards to your shame.1 Corinthians 15 [TRW]
So, did Paul sin daily? If Paul continued to sin and commanded others to stop sinning, then Paul was a hypocrite. And we know Paul was no hypocrite!
1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
1 Corinthians 11
So, if Paul was not a hypocrite and he stopped sinning, then we are also called to follow Paul, who was following Jesus. And did Jesus sin?
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
2 Corinthians 5
So it comes full circle, because in the first quote Paul equates righteousness with stopping our sin. Now he connects our ability to become righteous to Jesus having never sinned and being made sin for us. That means that our ability to stop sinning also has its source in the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ! Paul was no hypocrite and he was not calling you to be either. The Christian who claims to have fellowship with the Father, yet walks in darkness “lies and does not do the truth” [1 John 1.6]. That Christian (if you can call him such), “deceives himself and the truth is not in him” [1 John 1.8]. That so-called Christian has no cleansing of his sins by the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son [1 John 1.7]. John and Paul agree that if you do not stop sinning, then you are a hypocrite by claiming to be a Christian. You must awake to righteousness and do not sin! Stop sinning.
